They keep saying f/1.8 and then 24mm but later mention 3x optical zoom. So this is really an equivalent 24-72 lens and I kind of doubt that it's f/1.8 through the whole zoom range. Tricky marketing at work?

Kind of like everyone goes nuts over the S90's f/2 but they seem to overlook that it's max aperture is only f/4.9 at 105mm equivalent.

Upon closer inspection, I see it goes from f/1.8 at wide to f/2.4 on the long end which is pretty respectable.

Still, they WAY overhype the fast apertures on these new p&s cameras.

yeah. that was hard for me to realize when i went to dslr.

1.8-2.8 on a P&S won't do shit for bokeh, shallow DOF, or low light

Yea try that with anything bigger than a finger. Like someone's face.

The only p&s that can do decent subject background separation are the superzooms and you have to stand a mile away from your subject.

i think the panasonic gh1 with the 20mm f/1.7 lens has nice shallow DOF
but im not sure if its a p&s technically

That has a decently sized sensor though. I'm talking about the cams with 1/1.7 sensors and smaller.
