I heard some talk from a group of Locksmith guys regarding popular gun safes a while ago. The consensus from them was that nearly all of the consumer safes marketed as such are basically shit. Low grade locks, so-so fire protection (even from "fire rated" stuff), and thin exteriors that could easily be just ripped into with an axe seemed to be the biggest problems.

Take that FWIW, as these guys were trying to push people into high grade commercial type stuff, but some of it made sense and left me looking at my safes. I'm thinking my next house is just going to have an underground room (connected through the basement) with a vault style door.

My old boss had this style set-up, and it was awesome. It gave him room to line the walls/ceiling with stuff, keep everything gun related in one room, and he plumbed it with a sprinkler system in case of a fire. Rather trick, and he told me it was much cheaper than buying enough safe storage to house all of his valuables.

Where would we be without the internet? How would we realize that a $400 safe isn't the same as a bank vault or that our cheap commuter cars aren't actually in fact race cars if it weren't for forums full of people brave enough to stand up and point these surprising and astonishing facts. Thank you internet.

Rule of thumb with regards to safes:

If it takes 2 guys to carry it in, it'll take 2 guys to carry it out. Key is securing the safe properly, and concealing it, and shutting your mouth about it.

11 years ago I had my safe broken into. It's essentially the exact same safe you see on the first post. That is what changed my mindset with regards to safes, publishing any info about it, etc.

Which is why I never openly discuss or photgraph what or where on here or anywhere regarding my safe"s".

Coincidentally, I have a friend with a 2500$ safariland safe. REally big pretty safe. Only thing was, every time he had a party, he liked to show it off, along with it's content.

He came home from a trip with his wife to a house with an empty/broken safe.

First time, shame on you, second time, shame on me.

Did they bring their own tools or use your tools to open your safe? It seems like your own tools are often used against you.

I found some bent harbor freight looking screwdrivers and some cheap pry bar around the area.

It was a friend of mine that I had stay with me for a short time.

so I'll probably be purchasing a house in the next year or so, any recommendations on a "hidden" safe. like inside a wall etc. after reading AB13's posts I'm thinking the less visable the better. and shit, a built in safe has to add a little value to your home right?
