I play TF2 on servers with about 32 people. My current setup is:

    AMD64 s939 3500+
    XFX 8600GTS XXX Edition
    2GB RAM

I want better framerates in TF2. I run the game at 1680x1050 with 16xAF and 8xCSAA and it gets a little too jerky in big firefights. Even when I turn off AA it is still jerky. This is leading me to believe that it is the CPU that is hindering me.

Which would increase my framerates the most? I can get a E6750, mobo, and 2GB of RAM for $350 or I could get an 8800GT for ~$250. Eventually I plan on doing all the above but I want my first purchase to improve my TF2 framerates.

The HL2 engine is highly dependent upon processor speed.

Getting the best intel processor available improves things.

Get the video card. It's probably the eye candy slowing things down. The HL2 engine is old and doesn't need the latest and greatest CPU.

I just bought an E6750 setup. I dont multitask much so I don't think I should really spend the extra 100 on a quad core.
