Coming from a Canon G2 that I bought close to 6 years ago for $500. Now theyre only selling for $50  but I still like it. The 30D was $540 with BG-E2 grip, two batteries, and all the other stuff you'd get with the camera. He's shipping it out today.

What kind of lens do I want? My main uses are for product photography/macro.

The $85 price is the norm for that lens.

i have the old style sigma 24/2.8. its one of the sharpest lenses i own. cheap if you find a used one, less than a hundred. they currently make a faster asph version, just as good, but more money.

what lenses do you have currently? if you don't have any lenses, go with the tamron 17-50. right now all i have is a 30d and the 17-50 :o and i don't use them often enough to justify buying more shit.

Starting from scratch. The only thing I can carry over from the G2 is the batteries and 2GB CF card. I read that the Sunpak 383 Super won't work on the 30D.

get a wide angle like the 17-50 2.8. You dont want to be stuck with a prime as your first lens unless its a wide prime like 30 or 20 or 28.

If this is going to be strictly a product camera then by all means get what you need to get the job done. But if its gonna have multiple purposes, get an all around lens.

BTW keep your sunpak 383 it will help you down the road to understand light.

Keep the sunpak. You can always use it off camera down the road.

I've got a couple of Nikon flashes I use all the time off camera :big grin:

What budget for a lens? The 17-70 is pretty decent if you can only have on lens.
