Based on the normal Mac Pro lifecycle should we expect new Pro's announced at the January Mac World Expo? We need one for work but don't totally have to have it right now. Worth waiting or is nothing big expected?

Maybe. There should be a new Mac Pro released in the first quarter of 2009, but whether it is as early as January I don't know. I think it is more likely to be March before people have them in their hands based on all the information out there now. Intel aren't really giving any details away on time frame for the new processors and chipsets that the Mac Pro will use other than production will start in January. Apple have shipped around 6-8 weeks after processor production started in the past.

I would expect to see iMac updates first, so it may be another 6 months.

Mac Pros are beasts, and really aren't going to be outdated anyways.

Macworld doesn't seem like the kinda place they would pick to upgrade the Pro. It's really a consumer show. I'd guess we'll see the updates to the Mac Pros some time shortly after. Although it could be one of those updates they kinda throw out there at Macworld like "oh yeah and we also bumped the specs on the Mac Pro." but don't focus much attention on it.

Expect iMacs at MacWorld and new Mac Pros and xServes at WWDC alongside Snow Leopard. Although Intel Core i7 chips have started shipping so it's possible that there could be a revision at MacWorld, though I'd say it's unlikely.

You say that as if the two are linked which they aren't. Mac Pros get outdated as soon as Nehalem workstations start shipping which will likely be by early February.

Nehalem chips are already shipping, why on earth are you claiming it will take 4 more months to get workstations to market? Manufacturers have likely had the information they've needed to build systems on new Intel chips for months already.

Hell, Gateway (of all companies, lol) is already shipping a Core i7 based box.

That said, I still doubt new Mac Pros will drop in January because is doesn't fit the development and marketing cycle for the product. Aside from speed bumps, completely new pro products are more likely to be announced at WWDC than MacWorld, and the last bump to the Mac Pro was January '08.

Apple was first to market with a dual-dual and dual-quad workstation the last two times around. There's not any particular reason they won't do so this time as well.

Intel say production will start in January on the processors the new Mac Pro will use. Apple offered the 2006 Mac Pro and 2008 Mac Pro 6-8 weeks after production began on the processors they use.

    No. 8 cores. 16 threads :eek3:.

Only Bloomfield i7's are shipping. Gainestown has not, and likely won't till January or later.

iMac's are rumoured for an update this month possibly. No way in hell would Apple wait till WWDC to update the MP. Even if it is just a refresh, I bet we'll see a Nehalem MP by March at the latest. Which IMO is way too long as I've been waiting for this update for the past 5 months :(

I can't wait for the new ones come out. That will definitely be my next purchase. My MacBook Pro really struggles when I'm working on photos, and I need something with a larger hard drive. I'm thinking the base Mac Pro will be fine with me, 23" Cinema Display (not 24), then upgrade the RAM to either 4 or 8 gigs. All in all, I think it'll be around $3000.

No. Old news. Nehalem > that.

:werd: MBP isn't fast enough. And you'll be getting either 6GB or 12GB ram as Tri-Channel > Dual Channel

    I wish I was a student :wtc:

Hopefully once I get a new machine, I can sell my G5 and just have my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. Even though my laptop is still 2 years old, I feel like it's got lots of life left in it, although It just doesn't have the power it did when I first got it.

No way in hell Apple will go into WWDC without a hardware announcement, actually. :hsugh:

Everything else will have seen an update by WWDC (MB, MBP, MBA, iMac, etc) and it's also the show where Snow Leopard is scheduled for release. So, the chances are extremely good that they'll pair the SL release with the announcement of a new Mac product. The announcement of Snow Leopard will pretty much dictate the theme of the show just as iPhone 2.0 dictated the theme of he last WWDC. With Snow Leopard, you can bet that the theme of the show will be power and refinement and that indicates what hardware product in their line?

It's also not likely that they'll announce a completely new platform (like a tablet or a netbook) no matter how much the fanboys want it.
