edit: i think ive narrowed it down.

    tamron 17-50 f/2.8
    sigma 17-50 f/2.8

MAAAYYYYBBBEEE the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-5.6 (i think ive ruled this one out because i want a faster lens throughout the range.)

and im not so much interested in the 28-70 because i like wide shots

SOOOO the new question is, sigma v. tamron... the sigma seems do be a bit less money.

i still only have the canon kit lens. i like the versitality of it, but its... you know... the kit lens :ugh:

i dont want to spend much more than 200, and im not interested in a 50mm at the moment, ill pick one of those up later on. ill probably just search though the used stuff on some of the photo sites and pick on up when one looks interesting. ill probably be getting a sigma or a tamron. so between those 2 is there something i should look out for, or stay away from.

    :dunno:

the sigma 17-70 2.8 looks like one id be willing to pay more for, but i dont know anything about lenses.

i should also add that i know i want to get into the lower apertures because ive noticed in all the shots wit hthe camera thus far that i shoot in lower light sitations a lot, and they never are as sharp as i would like :wtc:

I'm in the same boat as you, welcome to the boat. Except I'll probably buy the 501.8 too.

spend a lil more, get a tamron 28-75 f/2.8 like i did. the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (i believe it's 2.8) seems to be a popular one also if you want a wider lens.

i paid about $300 for the 28-75 a few months ago. great for the price.

i dont have experience with sigma. but i do believe there is a good quality sigma in the price range of the tamron, and in the same focal length (not sure on the exact lens). i can only vouch for the tamron 28-75. i have read just as many praises on the tamron 17-50 as well.

    sigma has a 18-50 2.8 thats a constant 2.8, so is tamron > sigma?

i also really like the idea of 17-70 sigma but its only 2.8 in the side open range then its back up to 5 or something. so the 18-50 is more appealing.
