:wavey: I bought my first gun today, a Ruger SP101 (2") .357 magnum. I've shot semi automatic handguns and rifles before, but never a revolver. Since I don't have much experience with guns, I would like to take a training class. I'm mailing my application for a LTCF tomorrow. Any words of wisdom and/or suggestions on safety/training classes around Pittsburgh, PA are welcome. If you haven't guessed it from my name, I'm OP.

Good call on the training, especially since you are unfamiliar with firearms. This thread is however lacking in something...I just can't put my finger on it.

Pics can be found in fs, though I really wouldn't recommend looking.

  11. My dad had an SP101 back in the day. I liked it a lot. Hot .357 loads in the 2" version are pretty fierce.

Always remember the 3 most important rules of firearms safety:

    1) Keep your finger off the trigger.

    2) Keep your fucking finger off the trigger.

    3) Keep your fucking finger off the fucking trigger.

I could use some suggestions for ammo. I bought Federal .357 mag JHP's and .38 special WC reloads for target shooting/plinking. Sound okay? I bought a speed loader as well. I have yet to buy a holster or anything to clean my gun with. I do want to carry, but I'm thinking it will be a pain in the ass to carry on my body...but I think carrying it in my purse isn't a good idea either.

I haven't even shot it yet. Hopefully Wednesday. I don't want to go to the range alone and hubby isn't off until then.

It would be best to try and find a good holster (I use an M-Tac), since purse carry seems like a bad idea. If a BG grabs your purse, then he has your purse and your gun. Not to mention I see how long it takes my wife to fumble around a dig something out of her purse, so I wouldn't recommend it. Lot of people like Gold dots, be sure to get some good practice in with the ammo you are going to carry so you know where POI is, etc.

If you don't want to drastically change the way you dress (depending on how you do dress) ankle carry is a viable option. I do it with my 642 on really hot days that I can't bring myself to wear looser shirts. Of course the SP101 weighs A LOT so you may not be comfortable with a couple pounds of steel flapping around on your leg every time you walk.
