pay the extra and get the 05 with the updated LS2 motor. i am also searching for a used GTO and have decided that the 05's and newer is the only way to go.

Don't buy an 04, for the previously mentioned reasons.

their msrp's from the factory are comparable between the years. however, the resale value of the 05's will be significantly higher i would assume. i would say you are looking at a 5 - 7k difference between years.

My brother bought a new one. One of the 6.0s.

    Definitely get the LS2.

The car is very comfortable, it's a blast to drive and has a great ride. Of course it also sounds awesome and is plenty fast. Handles surprisingly well. Back seats are also very comfortable and there's plenty of room. Oh, and the traction control system rocks. It lets you spin the tires, but corrects you if you get sideways.

Trunk space is kind of limited. The blaupunkt sound system kind of sucks. Those are the only cons I can think of at the moment.

    It's a great buy IMO.

KBB.com says about $20k for a 04 and $25k for a 05... and i figure i could find 04 for about $18, in about a year in a half.. witch is about what i wanna spend on a new car.

other than Horsepower, whats the big differance between the LS1 and LS2?

LS2 with 6-speed is the only way to go. I might get an '04 six-speed before I'd get an '05 Auto.

Not knocking the Auto drivers, but for me, I'd definitely want the stick.

Ah the manual is so sweet man. The shifter is big and chunky and it just feels right for the car.

I havent experienced the wheel hop.

No problems with the guages here, either. They're quite possibly the sweetest guages Ive ever seen too.

Yeah its weight is ponderous...makes everything work harder, especially the relatively narrow (for the weight) 245's. And there are some bad rubbing problems when trying to fit wider tires.

But the power from the LS2 will drop the car into the low 13's, stock.

LS6 heads are used on the LS2. They flow better, and I believe have larger valves, not to mention different spring.

A 90mm throttle body, vs 78mm, along with a better flowing intake.

A different cam, exhaust manifolds and some sensor relocations.

The LS2 block has a lot more meat between the cylinder bores and is a siamesed (sp?) block. All in all, stock for stock it is a stout powerful engine that is rated at 50HP more?

For the mod community the intake and TB has already been addressed, which is what a typical LS1 owner would do, retail value of about $1200 or so.

LS2 blocks are more dependable when big boring with wet sleeves.

Just a quick comparison from the top of my head. :)

The 04 GTOs had the later LS6 intake manifod, while the LS2s have the original LS6 manifold, said to flow not as good. As far as the TB, I read Shaner can port a factory LS2 TB, the throttle-by-wire bolts on to the TB housing.
So $1200 seems on the high side for these upgrades, unless you're talking about getting F.A.S.T. stuff.

actually the ls2 does not have a ls6 manifold. its a completely new manifold. the ls6 manifold far outflows the ls2 manifold.
