I've been playing around with a decent point & shoot (Fuji S5200) for a while and figured it was about time to get a 'real' camera.

Was trying to keep the price down (thinking Nikon D40x, Pentax K100D, Canon XTI) so I could afford a couple decent lenses.

So, I'm browsing the cameras at Fry's Electronics and they have a Canon 30D sitting on display. This would normally be way out of my price range (maybe a little closer since the 40D came out, but still more than I wanted to spend), but this one had a sign that said "Canon EOS 30D w/ 28-135mm - $639". Turns out the display is the only one they have left and they think someone returned it as faulty. I'm still thinking I'll buy it and just send it back to Canon for warranty work... then they can't find the 28-135 lens :squint: They offer to sell me the 30D body for $450, but then they can't find the battery and charger for it so I can't even power it up and test it.

I ask to speak to a manager ... 20 minutes later and 3 managers/supervisors later, I'm talking to the general manager of the store. Since they have brand new 28-135 lenses in stock, I tell him to throw one of those in and I'll be satisfied since they are advertising a product that they aren't willing to sell. We go round and round for a while (because I know he's not going to 'throw in' a lens they have priced at $499). Since the aren't going to get any more 30D's in, they won't give me a raincheck on it either.

Finally, he calls one of the other Fry's stores and they have a brand new 30D kit with a 28-135, never opened, still in the box. The manager agrees to sell it to me at the crappy display model price :eek3:

So, a nice drive across Dallas to the other store and an hour later I'm sitting here reading the manual and waiting for the battery to charge up. Haven't even snapped a picture yet.

I've been lurking in OTAP quite a bit, with a few random posts. I've picked up quite a bit reading the posts in here ... hopefully it will help me turn out some decent shots and do this camera justice.

    Cliff's:
Fry's has display Canon 30D kit on closeout for $639, but can't find the 28-135 to go with it.
Persistence with the manager scores me a brand new 30D with 28-135 IS USM for $639

    Merry Christmas to me :wiggle:

congrats, but as a former frys top salesman, I would tell you to get the warranty on a demo, and I didn't even get one on mine when I was there. You wouldn't believe what some people do to demos, I had to replace 3 10d's with broken shutters from people sticking their fingers in it.

    Cool.

You could sell the lens for about $300 so literally you spent $300 on the body. Good deal.
