I hope you are good. You need to have almost perfect shot placement and to be within about 150 yards to get even a smaller dear with the .243 If it were me i'd of gone with a .308 or atleast the .270

Nevertheless, congrats on the new gun.

so if your off by even a little bit it wont take the deer down? i am a pretty good shot. it has the same veloicty as a 30 - 06, but is only a 100 grain bullet.

.243 should do you just fine on deer as long as they aren't too far off.

Granted I probably wouldn't have bought a .243 either but you can definately kill any "dear" within 150yds with it given your shot placement is good. You're obviously going to want to use premium bullets though, I'd look for the Federal 100gr Partitions or Win. Supreme 95gr. Ballistic Silvertips. While I would never take shots at this range pretty much all factory .243 big game loads retain enough energy and velocity to humanely kill at 300 yards.

You could probably kill any dear with a .38special if your shot placement was good...Whats your point? Doesn't make sense to get an underpowered gun.

    .243 will be OK.

I would have gotten a 30-06, or 300 WSM :mamoru:

    Not true.

I have been hunting with that exact same gun for 10 years. I have killed a decent amount of deer and never had any trouble. One of them was at ~200 yds and it ran about 30 yards before it collapsed. My buddies use 30-06 and their deer always run further than my deer. With a .243 the bullet goes in and expands like it is supposed to. With the 30-06 the bullet shoots straight through..doing less damage than the .243. I use 100 grain sierra bullets handloaded by my grandfather.

Now I don't know about "dear"... maybe their tougher:mamoru:

griffy, that is a beautiful gun and it will serve you well for a long time. Like I said, I've had mine for 10 years (I'm only 22...got it when I was 12... I started to sound like an old man there for a minute) and I love it. Congrats on the purchase.

.243 is probably the smallest caliber you should use for deer but it will definately do the job; you act like we're talking about a .223:hsugh:

My friend is selling an a-bolt stainless stalker in 300wsm with a scope (i think burris, I forget) for $600. He can't own any guns for three years :mamoru:

What kind of rounds is your friend using? Sounds like a bullet problem.

243 is fine....that's what my g/f has killed all her deer with :mamoru:

I've killed plenty with a 243. Deer aren't the toughest animals in the world. Some people on here act as if we're hunting elephants the way they trash talk smaller calibers:rolleyes:

Your friend should sell all his guns to a close friend or family member for $1 and then buy them back in 3 years for $2.

.243 is fine for most white-tail. Anywhere in the vitals and it'll be down in no time.

I personally shoot a .270, Jack Oconnor is a genius.

Jack O'Connor privately admitted that .30-06 is a better all around caliber than .270 :fawk:

Yeah I don't see why he wouldn't do something like that, I think he just wants to buy something else when he can own guns again :dunno:

Assault, maybe malicious assault actually since he apparently left a boot mark on the guys face:hsugh: He had to serve like 60 days in jail and is on probation for something like 3 years.

    I'd say you'd be fine with .243.
Just make sure you put it where its supposed to be (true of ANY caliber) and it will be fine.

I remember my first deer kill. I was 11 or 12 and I used my grandfathers (its mine now) Springfield 03A3. I got it a little further back than I should have, but it didn't run too far. I would have certainly appreciated something a bit smaller and more managable for my small frame.

BS! a .243 is a great gun and will work just fine unless youre hunting a huge animal with tough skin.
