I probably already know your answer on this (that it's bad and to stay away...) but I thought I'd ask anyway... cuz I'm kinda hoping the answer is different.

I have a friend who has recently been trained to be a tattoo artist. He did a six month apprenticeship under a guy who has been tattooing for 15 years. He is now free to do his own tattoos and is looking for clients. I really want to help him out in getting started (plus his rates are super cheap obviously).... but at the same time I'm worried about him being new and potentially fucking up my tattoo. He would still be working in his mentor's studio with all the proper equipment and sterilization stuff and everything. I'm not super concerned about his artistic ability because my design is fairly simple. It's more just about his knowledge of depth to go, shaky hand, etc (tell me what else could possibly go wrong!!)

Would you get a tattoo from a guy who's just finished his apprenticeship and hasn't done any solo tattooing other than a couple touch up jobs?

    First tattoo definitely not

Even if he is a great artist, I would go with someone more experienced simple design or not for your first tattoo

I would say that depends on your mindset and what it means to you.

If you are already tattooed and they are not a big deal, go for it. If you want a nice bit of work or are the type of person who regrets things much, I would stay away.

It would be my first tattoo... and it's one that I've been wanting for a long time. I'm thinking maybe I'll send a message to the guy who trained him and ask if he can do the tattoo but have my friend assist in some way. Seems like a good compromise to me (although it won't end up saving me the money like it would if he tattooed me)

I would do it but only after he's done a few others first. Let him get the initial shakes out of his system and then let him go for it. As long as it's a fairly simple design and he's gotten more comfortable then I say go for it if you are comfortable with the idea.

That first one looks awful. His lines look shaky as hell and he really shouldn't be tattooing paid clients yet.

You also shouldn't be concerned with cost. It's a tattoo. It's permanent. Spend the money to go to a quality artist.

Yeah the first one does look like shit. It can be fixed but he wouldn't be my artist until he's got some serious work under his belt.

 WOW!! After viewing his photos on facebook... he shouldn't even be in business. I wouldn't even step foot in that shop if I were you.

*coughs* That place is a five minute drive from my house and I've never heard of it. Trust me, there are FAR better places to get tattooed. Dave Shore is five minutes away from that guy and does phenomenal work. Check out Dragon Tattoo http://dragontattooing.com/ The website sucks but he's almost as legendary as the guys at Dutchman.

the guy working on my sleeve, Kenny, used to work for Dave Shore. I don't have pics of it healed but I can dig up a pic of my forearm the day after some of the color was done.

i got my first tattoo from a friend who was apprenticing.

id rather pay a fortune for a quality tattoo instead of taking the cost effective route and getting mediocre work.

Same with my friend. She's doing cosmetic tattooing now as well and she did my eyeliner and eyebrows for the cost of supplies (she normally charges $400). Nobody has any idea my eyebrows are tattooed because I still have eyebrows but they're strawberry blonde.

I would help a friend out and let me tattoo my thigh. BUT for your first tattoo you really should go to someone more experienced, someone that's going to give you a good tattoo. Something you will love and be proud of! :)

Yikes...yeah definitely don't go to that shop. It's cool to support your friends and all, but this is on your body forever...like everyone else said, find a solid place and get it done there.

The artist who is finishing my sleeve is at Fat City Tattoo in New Westminster. His name is Kenny. Awesome artist. I'd post their link but they haven't updated their site in, like, a year.
