Fish Oil Doesn’t Help Heart Attack Patients in Biggest Study

    By Tom Randall
March 30 (Bloomberg) -- Omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in the organs of oily fish including salmon and sardines, didn’t help heart attack patients prevent another cardiac event, a study found.
The report, presented today at the American College of Cardiology in Orlando, Florida, contradicts previous smaller studies that suggested a daily supplement may help ward off repeat heart attacks, strokes and death. After taking a gram of purified fatty-acid supplements each day for a year, patients in the latest research, the biggest of its kind, fared no better than those who were given olive oil.
The 3,827 patients studied also got the best recommended therapy for heart-attacks, the researchers said. Most of the earlier studies were performed when heart-attack treatments were less advanced, they said. New treatments for heart attacks are so effective, they may have overwhelmed benefits from the fatty acids, the scientists said.
“We saw no beneficial effect,” said Jochen Senges, professor of cardiology at Heart Center Ludwigshafen at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, in a statement. “In patients who are already taking optimal medical therapy, cardiac event rates become very low and omega-3 do not further improve them.”

:hsugh: one gram a day? isn't that pretty low?

Well the study is really flawed because there was no control group. The other group was given Olive Oil which is still considered a quality form of fat.

    Placebo basically IMO.

I'd be interested in seeing a higher dose study. It's too bad they only used 1 god damn gram otherwise this study would have been betters

anybody have a link to the study itself so i can start digging through it and deciding if i'm going to believe it or not

    1) No standard control group

    2) The "placebo" group was given olive oil... something that arguably works just as well as fish oil for heart benefits. Thus, using olive oil as a basis of comparison for the benefits of the fish oil is retarded.

    3) 1g is NOTHING. The stuff I buy at Costco is 1200mg (1.2g) PER SOFT GEL. Even the bottle suggests 2 pills a day (2.4g total) and most bottle under-estimate usage. Most people here taking fish oil likely consume upwards of 3-5g.

    4) These are people that are already suffering from heart issues. Fish oil is known more a preventative measure to reduce the risk of heart disease/heart related issues.

What does all this mean? This study is retarded.

I give my 110lb Black Lab 5g's twice a week. Keeps their coat looking nice and helps with heart health. However, my dog is fat so I am not sure the fish oil is going to help much with the heart thing.

 yea. they suggest 1500mg for most dogs but he sometimes doesn't eat all his food so i put 2-3 in there. great for their coats, but he's got bad joints too. he's already on a glucosamine/chondroitin supp for dogs, figured this couldn't hurt.

I take 10+ grams a day of that shit son. Today I also ate 8oz of salmon which contained at least 20 grams of fat without adding anything to it. Add that to the 5 fish oil caps i had with breakfast and that's a decent amount.

then again I dn't even take it for the cardiovascular benefits, more for anti-inflamatory purposes.
