I have a Canon 20D with kit lens + 50mm 1.8f. I just want to upgrade to a nice all-around lens before I leave for camping and traveling around Asia. My budget is just a wee under $300...any help would be appreciated.

  6. PM him, trust me he still has it, my friend is trying to get the lens from him through me but she's dragging her feet. Plus the seller said that if he can't get what he's asking for it he'll just keep it. If you're interested PM him. :bigthumb:

  8. Well I think the big trouble maker is away for a while so you don't have to worry.
But I agree, for $300 you're probably not going to find a better mid-range, multi purpose walk around lens.

Spend 360 and get the tamron, it's well worth it for..... actually you said you're traveling? Generally you want to go wide when traveling, kit lens is good (enough..... for you..... right now) for that. I use the tamron 28-75 as an event lens when I'm walking around taking pictures of people. The 17-50 is generally a little wide for me (for that purpose).

For $300...... Part of me wants to tell you to get a cheap telephoto if you don't have one, but for under $300 you can't get anything worthwhile. Tamron 28-75 I guess is still a good lens. It will get you to 75mm at 2.8 which is great for portraits and headshots (perhaps you'd want to use it at f4 though.... my copy isn't so hot at 2.8).

for the price the tamron is a great lens. it's no "L" glass but it's pretty close and 1/3 of the cost.

you can find them new for like $320.. shouldn't be too hard to find one used for $300
