So the apt I live in for the year (in college) is next to the student center that the complex has. They have wireless there and I'm able to get it with my macbook but the wireless card I put in my desktop pc doesn't have the range to pick it up. I have a wireless G router sitting around and I was told that I could use it to increase the signal and plug an ethernet cord into the desktop. Has anyone done this or know how do it?

What you need is called a wireless bridge. I believe Netgear ProSafe wireless routers have the ability to act as a bridge. (those are the good ones that come in blue metal cases.)
