I use to have a windows xp pro computer upstairs that would share the printer with the downstairs windows xp pro computer and the computers could share files. the upstairs computer recently died. My friend is giving me an old iMac for free. It will be perfect for me because all it needs to do is surf the web, email and microsoft word, nothing intense.

is there a way I can network the imac with my xp pro computer? I need to be able to use the printer to print and I want to be able to share files so I can exchange word documents between the computers easily.

i dont recall how i set it up, i believe it was fairly straight forward. i plugged the imac into the router, and found a setting on the imac that told it where to go for an ip. i cant recall if i set up printing tho

sorry, know its not much help, just clarifying that it is fairly easy

Getting it on the net will be easy. Printing to a printer shared from an XP machine could be a pain depending on what MacOS its running. I've done gotten 10.2 to print to a laserjet on an XP machine but it wasn't exactly as easy as printing from another Windows machine. Accessing a shared folder on the XP machine was pretty easy though.

Do you know of any sites that have instructions for this? When you did get a printer set up on your imac, did you just have to select what printer you wanted to use everytime you print and it prints?

I just googled something like "mac print windows xp share" or something like that. It was only the printer that was a pain. File sharing was easy.

i can get file sharing to work. i still cant get the printer to work. my printer is a lexmark x75. i have mac os x 10.3 on my imac, anyone have any ideas?

also, i got sick of the imac mouse (no scroll wheel, no right click), so i tried my microsoft mouse and the left click and scroll wheel work. is there any way i can get the right click to work?

i followed the instructions and got up to the part where you type in the address in windows search. it found the computer. i doubled clicked it and it asked for a user name and password. i entered it but it didnt work. i am 101% positive it was the right user name and password.

as far as the printing driver, when you go into the printer sharing preferences you may actually have to try a few different generic drivers. i know that when i networking my hp psc 750xi (connected to my winxp pro box) with my powerbook, i had to load a generic driver from the list to get it to work correctly. im still not able to mess with print quality settings (it's always set to 'best') but it works.

You're sure you entered the right password... and yet you don't even know the XP box's password? How is that possible?

And he doesn't need a generic driver. I linked him to the right one.

If the Mac is running something pre-OSX, why not throw on Linux? Most distros have a PPC version, and it runs quite nicely. Plus, with Samba, connecting to Windows file shares and printers is no problem at all.

He just needs to change the password on his account on the XP machine to something that he knows, and he's set.

Ah, I didn't catch that he was running OSX. Yeah, OSX plays quite nicely with samba servers.

I hate that you have to specify the IP manually to mount a drive. You can't just browse.
