but it comes with so much software that'll take up like 20-30 gb of the 60gb itcomes with (cheap model).

:dunno: need HD space for piracy purposes

i'd upgrade the hd to a 7200rpm drive but otherwise it's ok.

    Along this line of thought:

If you can't get a 7200rpm drive straight from the factory, buy the smallest 5400rpm drive you can. Save the money and buy a big 7200rpm drive when you need the space.

Be careful with a Compaq. I've had a few of them apart before; there's no metal skeleton to speak of, the plastic shell supports everything including the motherboard. Don't drop it.

Not bad but I agree, I would consider a Macbook. I would even recommend a Dell or an HP/Compaq

Are you playing Jollyogre while he's gone ?

Since he didn't say he was looking for a MAC, why does everyone insist on recommending it?

Because in reality, despite all the hate, Macs serve college students well. I'd love to have a Mac notebook to use for school, but I would never give up my PC desktop.

I never said anything about hating them, but it just seems to be the number 1 answer to any "I need a laptop/PC thread."

I've never used a Mac, but I'm sure there is some kind of learning curve since it's a different OS. Am I right?

    :ugh:

MacBook starts at $1050. You can get a nicely-configured ThinkPad for $1019.

That's two laptops that are within $100 of the shitty one you picked (the ThinkPad can go cheaper, too, they start at $719).

Why would someone buy a Mac just to run Windows?

Because it's a well-integrated system, and you can run every x86 operating system on it. Can't run your game on OSX? Run it on Windows. Need to compile your code for programming class in Solaris? Reboot and load Solaris. Don't know how to make Linux do anything you want it to do? Go back to OSX for your day-to-day work.
