It wont let me install it and I can not format because there is office information that can not be lost... the software that we use most wont work with a 32 Bit Os or something like that so how do I get back to windows 98

    win98 is a 32 bit os.

If you have an ntfs partition on the harddrive you will have to repartition and format it to get to fat32 which is what windows 98se understands.

Like what unrealii said... Just backup the data you need saved, repartition/reformat and Win98 will then be able to install...

Not necessary though if you have a free partition on your drive now. What Win98 needs is a primary partition in FAT32 format on the boot drive (and that partition must be made active). Once you've installed 98, you can use the 2000 repair (boot the CD), to force 2000 to dual boot between the two. It will not work on an extended partition.

If you made your whole drive one big partition, you don't have any choice but to do as they've suggested.
