Here are 2 pics of my living room/kitchen, which is connected. I am trying to figure out what color sofa/sectional would work well here. I am leaning towards a sectional and prefer a more modern look.

My main problem is figuring out what colors would go well with this particular shade of wood floor and the kitchen counters.

I am also thinking about getting some bar stools in front of the kitchen island, so if anyone could suggest what kinds or color, that would be great.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated cause I have no idea what I am doing... haha thanks.

Keep up with the wood theme. I wouldn't go with anything to modern looking or black.

    well, that leaves colors...
I'd say black will be your go-to color.
Anders, the whole place is modern, what rustic or non-modern piece would go in there?

A nice, big console for your AV components will work well under a wall-mounted TV.
    something like: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1152&f=30676
    or
    http://images.cb2.com/is/image/CB2/LoganMediaConsole3QF9?$lg$

The area between the bar and the railing presents an interesting problem. It might be too small for a good table and chairs, but too big to put a sofa without being redundant..

Either way, I like the space quite a bit.
    Cheers!

I think I may go with black bar stools in the kitchen and a cream colored sectional in the living room. I didn't even think about the console under the TV until you guys mentioned it... haha

The hard part now is finding a good cream colored sectional that would fit well for the living room. I've checked on some of the recommended places online but have not had luck so far. Also, what color rug would fit well under a cream sectional here?

I would go modern with hints of mid-century modern.

Keep the sectional neutral: maybe a charcoal gray with very clean lines...

I don't think I'd go this dark, but a shade lighter and it'll still pop with the lighter neutrals and allow you to keep the walls white if you want and still have it contrast:
    this style: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=112&f=3507
    but in this color: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=112&f=5329

That way you can compliment it with lots of different colors and textures: white lacquered pieces, brushed metals, etc.

I'd worry more about the scale, placement and context of what you buy rather than the individual pieces themselves. If you have a great couch, it won't help if you don't put it in the right place and all the crap around it looks awful.

Read through here and it'll give you a good place to start coming up with your own ideas :wiggle: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/ideas_advice/ideas_advice.ftl

I love your place, looks like there's so much potential there for a really luxurious & modern feel with a some decor and design work.
