I don't know much about buying guns, but was looking to buy a low cost pump shotgun somewhere online. What are some good recommendations for brands/models and stores online?

Lemme guess, this would be for home defence? If so, I would NOT recomend the lowest end model that you can get, you are going to want something that you know will work every time. Also, for HD, semi auto should be looked at as well.

    I have a Mossy 500. Works great.

Remmy 870 is also a great choice... they are almost identical shotguns.

Thanks. What are the big differences that set the mossberg apart from a high quality one?

    look.

Maverick 88 cheap Mossberg off brand.

Mossberg 500/590 = Remington 870 = Winchester 1300 = any of them will work for you, and are damn near equal in performance and for the most part, price. They differ slightly in appearance, but that's about it.

Mossberg 500 for great price with great quality. It's one of the few guns I've shot in my life which I would place absolute trust in firing if I needed it to.

    at benelli suggestion

I was talking shotguns with a cop/RO who told me Mossbergs generally use Aluminum for their receivers while Remington uses steel, can anyone confirm this?

True, explains the price difference between the 870 and the 500.

Will you ever be able to tell the difference? No.

You can get a nova for around $350. I guess compared to the 870 or 500 it isn't cheap.

What do you consider cheap? I just checked the receipt, I paid 290 for mine. I don't think thats expensive. (it's a benelli nova pump tactical, not a semi-auto benelli)

Or are you only thinking about the semi-auto benellis, which, yes....they are not cheap.

By all means that's not super expensive, but when you can get a M500 or 870 for under $200 for something with more accessory options and proven reliability, I'd say they win the day for utilitarian HD shotgun.

the only reason i'd never get a nova is the recievers and most of the firearm is fuckin plastic.
