im 5'9 160lbs, slightly skinny-fat. i played soccer all my life, so ive got some muscle in my legs, but have pretty much no substantial muscle on my upper body.

recently joined my colleges rowing crew. so i need to build up some muscle so i can not suck. in rowing there are 2 weight classes, lightweight at a 160lbs cutoff, and open weight. moving up a weight class would put me at a serious disadvantage because i'd be competing against guys 6'+ and >200lbs.

mostly i've got diet questions, because i know i'll get stronger from the gym/boat time. but i'm not exactly clear on how i should go about gaining muscle while losing fat at the same time, since i cant use the bulk/cut method most seem to use on here.

If you want to lose fat, youre probably going to lose some muscle.
If you want to gain muscle, you're probably going to gain some fat.

thats actually his best bet for his goals though. he definitely won't gain fat and with newb gains he might put on some size... either way he'll at least look better...

I did it in the past while dropping from 190 to 160. It was miserably slow and I'll never do it again.

It can be done. You need to eat above maintance high protien but stay above ketosis. But that's for bodybuilding you play sports so I would suggest to eat same amount of carbs to protien and eat clean. Again eat above maintance you will burn it off if your training hard enough.

If I was skinny fat and in a weight class I would cut, gain strength while cutting, then bulk to add more strength. Repeat process until very lean at top of weight class.

When I started a serious routine and fixed my diet about this time last year I went from 185 to about 170 and I actually noticed some muscle gain. Im now sure how that is possible but I think a good routine and clean food was definately a part of it, doing a cut slow also helps.
