I want a computer dedicated just for my photography. What are you guys using, PC? Apple? Specs...?

A good friend of mine just bought a Mac Pro w/ a whopping 10 GIG of RAM. He loves it, and he's still thinking of expanding. I obviously don't have that much money nor am I too fluent w/ Apple computers. Curious what you guys use.

With whatever it is you order, will you please keep us updated on it's shipping status, the time it arrives, and provide photos of it to us?

Apples are easy to use. If you need something basic, get an iMac. Otherwise get a bare bones Mac Pro that you can upgrade. And while you try to get a handle on the mac software, use the windows software side of it.

4GB or more - DDR2 is cheap as crap now a days. You can get 4GB for like $100 easy.

I've had my MacBook Pro for almost two years now, I love the thing.

I'm considering selling it if Apple releases some new machines in the next few months here. Mine's a Rev. A machine and I've been very pleased with it. The Mac OS is easy to learn too.

quad core with 4gb of memory.

a mac isn't going to be any faster than a PC these days.

that is, unless you want to look trendy. :dunno: :o

if you are using it for photography use mainly I would not worry as much about having the fastest proc available. I am also putting together a new PC. My main concerns will be

    1) ram ram and more ram. I am going with 4gb (2 x 2gb) cause it can be had for like 100 bucks
    2) the faster your drives can move data, the faster you will open, save and move your files. SATA drives 3.0 for this. Opening a RAW file takes forever on slow ass drives. I am going to use a external storage drive and a minimum of 2 smaller SATA drives. 1 of these drives will be dedicated as a scratch drive for photoshop to use
    3) I am going to make sure my vid card will support dual monitors in case I get a hair in my ass to buy a second one. I am not a gamer so a vid card that will do the job for less that 75 bucks. I have been considering the 8500gt

I have been debating on the dual core 3ghz chip just so cut some cost but you can also get something like this

    with this
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3244228
and I would like to get a pair of these
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...me-_-Hard+Drives-_-Western+Digital-_-22136012

takes me to about 825 before monitor. The other shit I already have. Just my input though

I'd say get a mac but i'm baised.

Just get something with as much ram as you can cram in to it. Lightroom likes ramz. And a nice fast CPU and fast drives.

You can get a Quad Core Q6600 for ~$200
Good ASUS MB for about $130
    Corsair 4GB DDR2 6400 - ~$100
    Antec 550W - $80
    Cooler Master Centurion - $40
    Optical drive - $30
    GeForce 8800 - $250
    2x's Seagate 500GB SATA II in RAID - $200

$1,030 for a very sweet setup

wife's cousin owns a computer store, I'm going to have him build me something. I just want to know what others have that would suit my similar taste. Ya, macs are trendy and cool, I don't really care about that as long as the end result is the same.
