Roommates computer running Vista just took a huge crap on him, cant get it to boot at all.

There is no recovery partition like i was hoping to install a second OS to back up his files. He cannot find his vista cd, i guess i could download it and try to repair it that way, but I would rather just find a quick way to get the data and then put 7 on it.

Im looking for the easiest idea in order to backup his files and then put 7 on it.

Im thinking booting linux off of a cd? Its been a while since I messed with linux but i know my way around for the most part.

I have access to external drives in order to back up (none are empty all are NTFS if that makes a difference)

Anyone have any input on this? Or a better way to approach this?

Put the drive in an external enclosure and copy the files off it to another computer.

Put the drive back into his computer and install W7

Wait 9 months, then ask us where to download an illegal copy of Windows 7 RTM.

Repeat the first 2 steps again.

I thought I got an email from Microsoft saying the RTM will be shipping on October 22nd? I'm sure it will be leaked not too long after...

Run a search on google for a Vista recovery disk. You can download that, burn it and boot off it to fix the mahcine.

But people won't buy it until their computers start shutting down every 2 hours.
