I am a little chubby. I'm not fat, but I do have a gut that I've developed nicely in the first few years of college. I'm about 190 and 5'9". Fairly muscly build except for the stupid beer gut and waist. I've always worn jeans and a t-shirt... I've never ever cared about my appearance and I figure it's about time I start to dress and groom nice while I work on dropping 20 pounds before college ends next year.

The main reasons I want to look better are obviously for girls and because I'm in a band that plays out and I'm sick of looking like a homeless guy that picked up off the street.

It's impossible to find a nice pair of jeans. Old Navy are OK for the first week and then they stretch and get way too baggy and make me look even fatter. Not to mention they get holes super fast. So I'm down to spend a few more bucks if I can get some real quality.

I also have a hair question. When I use shampoo my hair goes flat and makes me look like a dumbass. It looks much better if I just use lots of hot water every morning, but then my hair is dirty. Any ideas?

A price range and style would be nice. What kind of music do you play?
APC seems to be a nice bet if you live in USA for jeans. I mostly use scandinavian brands myself, so I can't help you much there.

You can get a shampoo that gives you more volume. A stylist should be able to point you out something for your hair type.

I only need 2 pairs of nice jeans and I could probably spend $60-$70 each. I dunno what that gets me these days but maybe I could bump it up. I also want some shirts that would look good to wear to class every day that might make me stand out a bit from the billions of bro-dawgs on campus.

We play a mix of progressive rock and hardcore.

I don't really know my style. I wear black shirts and blue jeans normally but at formal occasions I usually wear a black button down shirt and black pants and I get told I look very good.

I don't wear flashy colors casually because they show off my gut more.

Well, if you want to dress nicer I would recommend some dark jeans. A fit between slim and regular should be good because of your size. You can always go slimmer when you loose the weight you need. If you want some nice jeans that last I'm afraid you need to pay more than 60 usd.
I love cardigans, and if you want to hide your gut they should do that quite nicely. Cardigans works great with t-shirts and and shirts, and if you want you can style it up with a tie.

If it gets cold where you are, fall is a nice time to experiment with layers and earth colors.

why is that a bad mindset? i dropped ~35 lbs and dropped 5 pant sizes. went from a 38 to a 33...and from a L borderline XL to medium/borderline small. if he is serious about losing the weight, then not only does he save having to redo wardrobe, like i did, but it can also serve as a reward for the hard work he put in to lose the 20 lbs.

it can take someone a long time to lose 20 lbs (or it may never happen), i don't think there's anything wrong with buying some items that suit him now. every time i go shopping with friends, there's always one chick who buys something 2 sizes smaller for "when she loses the weight". not only is she completely ignoring her current needs, but a lot of the times she doesn't reach the goal and then what?

Just buy a couple pairs of jeans now to hold you over until you get down to your goal weight.

damn, ive seen your waywt pics, but do you have anything from when you were +35 what you are now just for reference?

curious as ive gone through a similar weight drop and went from 38 to 34(and could probably comfortably fit into 33 now that i think about it).

as for the op, i would try to just wait and save up after you lose the weight(you really have to be determined here) but getting a few key pieces would definately help. im trying to just save myself but find myself wearing nothing but my 1 pair of jeans and a black tee when im not at work and wishing i had more variety.

That was my drop as well. Did it over 6 months. Just got my first pair of size 33 jeans (just nudies, nothing flash) and feeling good. First time I've had jeans that small since I was 13 so feeling pretty happy with myself. Bought some new shirts as well. Medium instead of large. Still got a bit of a gut and a much smaller set of man boobs, but I'm getting there
