so first of all i don't know dick about internet connections and setting them up or what i need to look for.

I tried asking in the main forum but it got alil messy with numbers every where, however i was able to gather a bunch of data that can hopefully help me explain where im at and what im trying to do.

so im trying to optimize my internet connection becasue in the past ive always just plugged it in and used it, now i wanna now how good of a connection i have? and what i can do to make sure its running the most efficiently. i get lag sometimes on the PS3 but i wanna know if im creating the lag or if they are?

    ---

    This is what i have

    comcast internet provider : cable

    this is my Router ^

    this is my PC ^

and i have a PS3, i do not game on my PC only on my PS3.

there is another PC and a laptop on the same router but, 9 times out of 10 its just my PC or my PS3 running.

    ---

    Speeds

    using : http://www.speedtest.net/

    Compaq laptop on router wireless

from PS3 internet browser wired with router

    8.64 down
    2.21 up
    ping 21
    from san jose

    ps3 direct to modem wired

    23.03 down
    2.13 up
    ping 22
    from san jose

    ---

    Questions

    1. the comcast modem is in the other room and im using a 50 foot Ethernet, is that bad? (i was told it doesnt matter :o)
    2. is it normal that my PS3 gets a 22 ping and my PC gets a 70ish?
    3. my PC is about 6 years old or more, could my modem be tired and slowing it down? would it effect the speeds?
    4. is this worth anything or is it just marketing? Hawking HBB1 Broadband booster? http://reviews.cnet.com/networking-a...-31398247.html
    5. i have a NAT type 2 connection on my ps3 (which from what ive read, is what most users want) does that mean i do not need to open up ports to make it faster?

    ---

ive been on google looking this up and im confusing myself more, any insight or info would be very much appreciated? i hope i organized the thread enough so its not a cluster fuck numbers and questions... :o

    :dunno:

im on dsl so those speeds are what i dream of. to give you some referrence my dsl maxes at 200kbps (real speeds) and i am on a 2.5mb connection. my speeds on dslreports are usually 1.5mbps.

having said that. my experience as far as routers and modems go are like this. modems are good/bad as far as their configuability is concerned. usually a modem will not slow you down a router on the other hand is different. i just switched from an old wrt linksys to a buffalo (hp-54g) router and my browser pages pop much faster. (but dl and pings are the same) i think this has to do with latency but im probobly wrong.

describe in more detail what you mean by lag. with my (much slower connection) i stream music/videos without a problem while 2 other computers are using the connection wirelessly.

just Lag in general it depends on the game and who im playing with it could skip, freeze for a sec, freeze all together, it depends but i donno if its me thats causing it or them? i used to just say it was them becasue 9/10 times my connection is lag free but i donno?
