Im buying a new laptop, and Ive been shopping around, and it seems Dell offers the best option.

    I need:
    1.66ghz Core Duo
    1gb ram
    14 inch SXGA (wide)
    dedicated GPU
    4+ hour battery life

Inspiron 640m offers all of that except for the dedicated GPU (and it looks hot too), which is a drag...

    Can anyone suggest something else?

WRONG. The Z61 is a core duo, and it is now "titanium" in color.

and even if you think it's ugly, it still kicks the shit out of the dell... And you'll care about that when you have to send the dell back for warranty repairs 20 times.

For the price of that Dell, you can get a MacBook...

Don't go with a Dell... it may be cheaper up front, but you'll pay for it later.

He said for the same specs...

Yes the base macbook is 1099, but he doesn't want a base model laptop. He wants a little more as provided by the specs given above.

Note: 1GB of ram. Dedicated GPU. And the 13" screen might not be big enough if he needs extra ram/gpu.

He would need at least the basic model Macbook Pro which starts at $2000 and only comes with 512MB of Ram. Plus, if he's looking for a Windows based laptop he's likely looking to use Windows based software...
He could run two operating systems, but what's the point? There are Windows based laptop brands that are extremely reliable (Toshiba, Asus, etc) and can be had for a fraction of a similarly equipped Macbook.

What is the difference between 6400 and 640m other the the fact that 6400 is cheaper and has a dedicated GPU.

NO WRONG!!! Toshiba is among the worst. The only three that you can list are IBM, Asus, and Apple... And since we're talking PCs that leaves only IBM and Asus.

    Gad damn Toshiba is shitty.

I'd stay away from Dell and Toshiba. Dell's have a 26% return rate on laptop, that should tell you something. And Toshiba's have fan failure issues which will result to overheating.

Honestly, I'd buy an Asus. :dunno:

Did they recently go downhill? I've always heard they were good.

They went downhill back in 1999. They hit an all-time shitty low around 2003-2004. They made some changes and got back to the below average, bottom 40% category, and have just hovered there ever-since.

No one at Toshiba can explain how they've had a fan-failure, cpu-overheat problem in every model for the past 5 years, and they STILL can't fix it for new models. Dumbasses.

I had a Toshiba lappy for almost 3 years. I bought it at Worst Buy, with their 3 year contract. Good thing too. I went in a total for 5 times, than I finally got a new one. It had the CPU fan die, ran way too hot. They couldn't figure out the problem. For all its worth, I like this Compaq Turion64 I got now.

Not to beat a dead horse, but before you buy a notebook on the numbers... go and actually use the ones you're thinking of buying. If you buy a MacBook, you will carry it everywhere and it will become a seamless part of your life. How does the size, dimensions and design of the other one compare? You can't buy a portable like you buy a desktop. Design matters.
