Ok this post could get kinda long so bare with me.

Heres my situation. Ive only been in the Army 3yrs now but it feels like way more. Ive been around the military all my life. Pops did 20yrs and I only waited a year after HS to sign up. When I originaly when to sign up I wanted to do the samething my dad did which was field artillerly (13M). When I told him thats what I wanted to do he told me if I did he would never let me back in his house. He said I need something that will benifit me in the long run. So I went signal.

My first and only duty station has been strategic. During my time here I have seen a lot of things that I just dont like. The biggest thing (and reason for my post) is the promotion happy fast trackers. Im sorry but I just dont agree with it. From E-1 to E-4 I can understand. But when it comes to the ranks of NCO I dont like it. To me there is more to just answering abunch of questions and copying a buch of answers. NCOs need to be know there job, be wise, professional, and most importantly take care of their soldiers. Basicly the Creed. But I see way too may people getting promoted simply cause of the money, and not giving a damn about soldiers, or just giving monthly coulselings just to cover there ass.

My unit is basicly forcing me to go to the promotion board. I feel Im not ready to go. There is way more of the Army I need to know/learn before I feel im ready to be a NCO. IE...ive never been deployed or even been to a tactical location of anykind. Anyway I could go on more but Ill cut it short cause its allready too long. Any thoughts?

Go to the board. Learn the NCO Creed and live by it. You already have a head start above your peers because you know it is a much more important job and the responsibility is far greater. Just always take care of your soldiers first. The rewards and the discipline. They will respect you in the end.

Otherwise, go and have a chat with your CSM. Tell him/her how you feel. They might listen they might not, but at least you got it off your chest.

I was Signal Corps, too. But I hope you like it. I hated every minute of it. And I don't plan on ever continuing in that field.

NCO's in the Army are E-5 and up. Unless you get a lateral promotion to Corporal from Specialist (E-4). Then technically I think you are considered an NCO, but I've heard that depends more on the unit you are in and your MOS.

Go get promoted. even if you don't feel like it. If your superiors thing that you are NCO material then they may see something that you don't. They may see some potential that you are not seeing. So go get promoted.
