I run a site for a local lake community. I would like to add a feature to the site that shows the water's temperature. Does anyone know of any software that would allow me to place an outdoor thermometer in the water and syndicate the water temp back to the site?

Maybe there's a thermometer that will tweet the temp out every few minutes?

no matter what you find to do this it won't be accurate since the water temps will be different throughout the lake. Could see how it would a nice thing to add though

It doesn't have to be 100% accurate, but just a gauge. I'm thinking of putting it about 5-10 feet under so its not right on the surface, but still not too deep to give a colder than average temp.

heaps of those weather stations have web interfaces and data logging it would be pretty simple to grab this info

This will be the cheapest/easiest way to do it.

There are weather stations that have web interfaces, but they're expensive as shit.

Shouldn't matter. I would imagine this is for "display" purposes.

I've used these before with good results:

    http://www.weathershop.com/temptrax-E.htm

you can find the older ones on ebay which don't cost too much. the ones i've used just hook up to a serial port and are pretty easy to query

EDIT: on the above link, look for "BAREBONES TempTrax Model F" toward the bottom. That's what I have. Pretty cheap at $140
