Mods: This is obviously a bit of a technical question... however I have a feeling asking this type of question in the computer tech forum would get more of a "you want to hack a web account?" type response; which isn't quite what I'm looking for. That aside, you guys are mods for a reason... if you think this topic shouldn't be here, please delete/close it and I'll remake the topic in the tech forum.

I have a feeling that very few of the users here will actually know what I'm talking about. Some time ago when I used to post on here and my then girlfriend used to post pictures we needed some place to host her pictures. After what was apparently not enough looking, we settled on a free web site and began hosting pictures.

Everything was peachy... but only for a while (otherwise I wouldn't be writing this). Long story short, we lost the user/pass to the website. Hell, I don't think we even have the FTP address to connect to either. As you can imagine, this is a bit of a problem when you want to take the pictures down...

We can't contact the web company (they won't respond to e-mails and no phone number listed) and there's no way to retrieve the password. The site is www.coolfreehost.com Any suggestions?

I'm a mod solely because I am a freak. :mamoru:

I read your problem a couple times, but couldn't really think of anything. Maybe the day shift would be able to help you out better.

:noes: I had this issue, I had forgotten my password to take down 2 of my pic directories. As far as i know you'll have to contact the admins for that site.

    :dunno:

I', so sorry that had to happen.

call the tech support for your web host, tell them you need to have the ftp password reset for your account. I had to do that for my host, (NON freaky :p)

it happens dont worry about it.

if they're not returning your calls or emails, maybe they aren't running anymore?

did you try every method of contact they had? you'll have to get the password reset by the admin (which i know has already been said) but if you don't remember your username either... you're in trouble.

If you can't access the pics anymore, I'd say don't worry. For under $90/year you can get good hosting, we use LunarPages, but there are lots of good hosts. When you pay, you get responses to your support needs.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Yeah, I tried sending a few... never got a reply. Thanks for the title change though.

I'll try pestering him and see if he can help out in some way.

Short of calling, I've e-mailed the abuse@ address... nothing. I've tried signing up for another account hoping the FTP address might jar something...can't sign up.

I'll see what info he can give, thanks guys.

You may want to try a Google search for "brute force FTP" or the likes. Basically, if you own the account, you should be able to download some software that will perform a brure-force "attack" on the server to retrieve your password. Note that the host will likely not take kindly to this, but you can likely get your password and access.

Me? I would email them a few times and after about 3 times of no response let them know that you are going to refer this to your lawyer and file a suit against them in court. Be polite, but be firm.

Under no circumstances should a host put you off for more than one business day. I run a tiny hosting company and reply to all customers within 15 minutes if I can.

Owning the account or not, they won't like it. Past that, I have *NOTHING* on the account. Gonna be rather hard to brute force the account if I don't know what username I'm bruting.

I'm gonna try to give him a call on Monday and see what happens.

I would send an email, link your site.. and say something along the lines of

"Hi, my name is XXXXX and I would like to report a violation of my copyright to the pictures located here (your link) these photos are the sole property of myself, and are being hosted on your domain without my express permission. Please have the images removed, and the account of the user deleted as part of your TOS agreement, or I will be forced to take legal action.

They usually will close the account for copyright infringements, as long as you didn't tell them the entire story already.. Otherwise time to break out a new email account.

This is the worst case, I can't remember my login info stuff...

PS it is prolly your OT login info for the site?

Thats a nice thought, but it isn't going to work since it is a free hosting site. If they had paid money then they would have had to sign a contract, and it would be violation of contract, but since it was free the hosting site is under no obligation to tailor to their needs (even if that need is account access). Further more, since it is a Canadian based company, you're now dealing with international law (assuming you are from the US or well, not Canada) and that just add a whole new pile of problems to the table.

Cliffs: Unfortunatly, unless they feel nice, hacking is the way to go.

Meaning that they don't have to give you access to your account if they don't want to. If they want to lock you out of your account (or not tell you your password) they can. It doesn't matter what is on that page, the information and the account belongs to them. Had they stated that all copyrighted material remains property of the owner then it would be infringement of copyright. Furthermore, unless the pictures posted have a copyright on them they can be used by anyone thanks to the fair use act.

However, if in the court of law you can prove you're the person in the pictures(which would be pretty fucking easy lol), that can be used as a "copyright" of sorts, at least that's what I was told by my agency's lawyer when I was modeling.. He warned me of that in case people started claiming to be me on the internet..
