Hey OT. i've got a project i'm working on here at work. unfortunately i can't post the image i'm supposed to work with here because they don't want it getting out before release (sucks i know).

anyway the shot is a model in a patterned dress against a background that is a patterned wallpaper. so here's my task that i need help with.

Is there a reliable way in Photoshop to get rid of the background leaving just the image of the model with consistant smooth lines? my problem is that while i can wing it and cut something like a geometric shape, (building, company logo, etc.) i can't cut soft lines at all.

    any advice?

Filters>extract. Depends on how much the bg clashes with the dress.

this seems to be working well. i tried the smart select thing really quick and while it wasn't 100% it was pretty good. the dress is black and the background is red(ish).

quick mask, paint around her, then add a little gaussian blue to feather the edges.

i'll have to find this pen tool. i used the extract method and its pretty good but the edges are really sharp and hard. shadows made this difficult.

Click on "preview" after you did your extracting. Once that's done, you can touch it up with the brush tool. Press CTRL to undelete if needed. Then on the bottom right.. select the different colored backgrounds to check for stray pixles.
