So my uncle just hooked it up fat with a 320GB external hard drive pre-loaded with a little over 200 GB's of music.

Problem is I'm on a macbook pro with a 120GB hard drive, with about 10GB of free space and 41GB of music already. Basically I can't just copy all this new music onto my computer.

Some of the stuff I'll be transferring to my computer to put on my iPhone, but I'm wondering if there is a way for me to get both the current 40GB of music on my computer AND the new 200GB of music to all show up in my iTunes, keeping in mind that quite often I will be disconnecting the external hard drive and will then only have the music on my computer.

I have music on my external hard drive, I just highlighted all I wanted by holding shift down and dragged it into itunes and it shows up and plays fine.

but i don't want to do that.

I want to keep the 40GB on my computer, and use that when I'm out and about (i.e. when I don't have my external). But when I do have the external I want to be able to use everything, but when I don't have it I don't want that to be a problem.

hold down the option key when launching itunes. create a new library on the external drive with all of the music from your uncle. copy your own stuff to that library.

hold the option key when you launch itunes and choose whether you want the internal library or the external library.

So you want iTunes to show the 200gb + 40gb of music when the external is plugged in. Then when it isn't plugged in you want iTunes just to show the 40gb and automatically remove the 200gb from the library?

ALL my music and vids are on an external which is wirelessly networked, so I have it no matter where I am.

don't create a new library, just go into prefs and either uncheck the move to library option, or change the default location to store songs

how long are you holding the option key? if you let go as soon as you click, it won't do anything. you need to hold the key until a text box pops up with the options "choose library" "create new library" or "cancel".

Same thing in iPhoto. Been using it for quite a while. Nice feature. Not sure why they don't make it easier though.
