We currently have a Windows 2K3 DC and a Windows 2K DC setup at work.

We just bought another W2K3 server and when I try to promote it to a DC, I get an error saying that the Active Directory wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows server 2003.

I ran the adprep tool when I put in the first W2K3 DC, and trying to do it again (now), says it has already been done, but I still can't promote this server.

    WTF??

Ok, made some more progress, but still stuck.

I just relaized that the new server has W2K3 R2 on it so I found out that I have run adprep to update to R2 on the other server.

Well, I ran the right version of adprep, but I'm still getting an error.

"Adprep was unable to check the forest update status"

    ???

Does the Windows 2003 server know that it's supposed to become a controller for a Windows 2000 domain? If it doesn't, it's going to get confused when it doesn't see a Windows 2003 domain.

    Nevermind... Got it fixed.

I figured out that the schema master role was assigned to an old DC that isn't here anymore. I had to transfer that role to another DC and that seemed to fix everything.
