so i restarted my computer last night, and when it booted back up i got a screen with a flashing question mark inside a folder

so I went to the mac support site, and did what they recommended...booted up with my CD, opened up Disk utility and attempted to repair disk under first aid. Except it won't let me click repair disk. so I tried everything else they recommended on the site, and nothing is working.

anyone else had this problem? Is my harddrive just shot and need to be replaced?

I got my computer connected to another mac, and was able to get into target mode, but nothing is showing up on the other mac, the hd isn't appearing

however when i insert the install disk into my computer thats fucked up, it appears on the other comp as an external drive

so the harddrive is fucked i guess

yep, sounds like it. Instead of trying to Repair Disk can you Verify it?

This happened to me a little while ago where there was a bad sector written somewhere and when it tried to read/write over it the hard drive locked up. It wouldn't let me boot or repair the disk. When I formatted and clean installed it worked again.

when i go to disk utility, and click on my HD, I don't have the ability to 'verify disk' or 'repair disk'

I have the option to 'verify disk permissions' , and when i click on that, it pops up and says "No valid packages"

so ya i'm gonna go ahead and say its fucked. Pisses me off, I tried to access my HD via target and can't even get information off of it. fuckin thing sucks

But does this all sound consistent with just HD failure?

I don't wanna go buy a new HD and have it not work
