or simply upload a blank text document renamed to index.html

Drop this in an .htaccess file in your top level directory

    Code:
    Options All -Indexes
With that in there, people will not be able to see what files are in a directory that lacks an index file.

If you are running cPanel on your site, go into "Index Manager" and you can set it all up through there very easily.

even when you protect your directory, if you have the pictures posted as thumbnails, directly linking to the jpg, it can still be mass downloaded. make sure you link to websites that display the full picture.... and then throw an ad or two on it :big grin:

Which control panel are you using?

cPanel is pretty common, and if you have it, simply login to it, and select the "Index Manager" option.

Simply navigate to the directory you wish to protect, click on its name and you'll be given the options:
    Default System Setting
    No Indexing
    Standard Indexing (text only)
    Fancying Indexing (graphics and text)

Oh, I just saw that you have dreamhost.

I'm pretty sure you have to do this via the .htaccess file/files since they don't use cPanel.
