I can't decided between these two lenses
I've always wanted the 24-70, and never really considered the 24-105mm

I know the 24-70 will give me a brighter viewfinder, and it'll allow me to "freeze motion"... so to speak :o
But the 24-105 has image stabilisation, and will be better for hand holding

im going to japan in two weeks, and wanted a lens to take travelling

so far, im going with a 11-16mm f/2.8, a 17-35mm f/2.8L and i want to pick up either of the 24-XXmm lenses before i leave

i read a thread on POTN :)mamoru:) and everyone said they are glad they got a 24-70mm over the 24-105

has anyone else made this decision recently? what are your experiences?

    thanks

    edit: going on a 50d

On my trip to Mexico the 24-105 worked great for me.

On my trip to Monaco the 24-70 worked great for me.

I could write the same things you've prob already read everywhere....bokeh, weight/size, IS blah blah blah. They are both great lenses and you cant really go wrong. The IS wasnt really all that useful to me.

I'm really no help, so get the one you'd use more when NOT on a trip?

when you come back, let us know what lens you use most. going to europe in sept with 3 lenses. trying to predict which is best to leave the hotel with.

I can't imagine IS really being useful to me, none of my lenses have it, so I've never had to rely on it
I always just bump up the ISO :o :mamoru:

Why was the 24-70 better in Monaco?, did you take both lenses with you when you went to mexico and monaco?

What three lenses are you taking?

    Personally? I'd get the 24 - 70 2.8... the extra stops ftw...

The 24-105 is a good travel lens since it covers a very useful focal range, is relatively light, and has IS. However, I think the 24-70L is a better long term purchase because of the extra stop. Can't really go wrong with either though, just prioritize if the extra reach plus IS is more important or if the f2.8 and bokeh is more important and go from there.

It wasnt better...i just rented it for that trip, my only other lens at the time was a 10-22.

Then bought a 24-105(bc it was cheap lol) for a later trip to mexico.

Purely from a travel/all around lens for a trip. I'd probably go with the 105 for the extra reach and lighter weight.

If I had to buy one for good...it would definitely be the 70. :hs:

i'm also going to japan in a a couple weeks and on my 50d will be bringing the 10-22, 24L, and 24-70 ... the 24-70 really isn't as heavy as people make it seem and i think the weight goes well with a gripped 50d :dunno:

:werd: weighty in my mind (at least on a gripped body) = balanced.

    24-70L

You get 2.8, macro, beast, backwards zoom (how cool is that), and the pride of not owning a kit lens.

But if you are one of those weak people that complain about weight, and you have special spiritual bond with IS, and you think to yourself that one day the extra 35mm reach will help you to save the world, then by all means please get the 24-105.
