My father's birthday is coming up and I need to get him a new flashlight that he can carry with him. Preferably something he can drop in his pocket and not need a carrier pouch on his belt.

    Ideas?

That's great little flash light. Surefire G2 is only like $40 and a little bigger.

    Former Marine... ;)

But, on a related note... the G2 is pretty bad ass, I'd recommend that.

Well because he was an Ex-marine, Ex-cop, and Ex-marshal he should get a surefire. But if he was just a regular Joe a maglite would do.

G2's are nice, but if he's going to pocket carry it, look at an E2E. Also the E1E's are pretty dim. Depending on budget the new L1 is an awesome light, as is the L4.

Let us know a budget and how he plans to carry it, pocket, belt, truck console....

While I agree that there are LOTS of quality lights out there for good prices, you really can't go wrong with the build quality of SF if you have the $.

Fenix P2D CE. It's smaller than a cigarette lighter and brighter than my TLR-1.

    dot. I have a P3D and it's a little bigger but I would have gotten the P2d if I didn't get the P3D for $35.

The budget here is $100, main factors I want are LED (for the battery life) and small form factor.

The regular incandescent ones are nice, but with battery life as low as it is on those he'll be leaving it at home just because he'll use up the battery and then not remember to go buy a new one for a week or so.

So for common battery choice and LED I'd look at Fenix lights. I'm not sure their current model offerings, but they make excellent utility EDC lights. Or you could get him something that uses 123 Litiums and also give him a box to keep him going.

They are pretty nice. I'll take some pics of the output of mine tonight when it gets dark, I was pretty amazed when I first got mine.

Do you think the 2 puts out enough, or do you wish you had gone for the 3? It seems the 3 puts out quite a bit more with the extra battery and isn't all that much bigger.

100+ lumens should be more than enough for a pocket light. The majority of my pocket light use is less than 50 lumens.

For me, I like to get a LED keychain light and a incandescant pocket/2 cell light. I had an Arc AAA from 2001-2007 and now carry a Fenix L0D CE. Also had a Fenix P1D CE but sold it and kept with my SureFire G2Z w/ upgraded lamp. The LED will get used 99% of the time and AAA batteries are cheap and easy to find. A high powered incan light will last a while before you need a battery change. I had the G2Z before with P61 LA (estimated 20 minute runtime) last me 4 months before. I like brightness > runtime for a personal light.

I did a test to see how long the runtime actually was. Do not try at home. Running a light down like this is bad for the filiment. Notice on the bottom how bright a Mag AA on new batteries compare. :o
