I'm at a complete loss on what to do. My father, a US Vietnam era veteran is about to be kicked out of his apartment and doesn't have anywhere to go. I've been fighting back tears for the last few hours and I'm desperate for any advice vets or those serving can offer.

See, last year, my dad lost his job at Circuit City after 9 years because the company wanted to bring in someone for half his wage. After months of looking for something new, nothing was coming up. What's worse, he can't even get a manual labor job because a back injury prevents him form heavy lifting.

So now, he's a little more than a month away from being homeless and I just don't know what to do or who he can turn to.

I'm 25, father's 50. We're both in Michigan. He lives about 20 minutes or so away from me so I can take him in on if I need to, but that'll put me at risk of losing my home (part of the lease)

you're 25, assuming you have your own place? Why can't he stay with you til he gets back on his feet?

Edited my post from above before you posted. The lease I'm in only permits two people living in the condo (which right now is me and the chicka). Since the owner lives a few doors down, it won't take her long to figure out someone else is there. Now, I'd move, but I can't afford the security deposit at a new place.

Go explain to her the situation your father is in and that you are going to let him stay there til he gets on his feet. I can't imagine she's that much of a cold hearted bitch to say...no, he can't stay with you.

Technicality... I only know this b/c my parents used to rent a condo:

Have him change his perminant address elsewhere, to a friends house, it doesn't matter.

If technically he has somewhere else to live, he is a guest, not a co-habitant. Not a violation of the lease. If the landlord says something, then just say he's visiting, and is not a perminant resident - tell her to not bother you beyond that, and to take it to court if she has a problem. One, she won't do anything, two if she did then you would win.

those clauses are so you don't have like 20 people sharing an apartment. Put your dads stuff in storage.

I'm sure there is more to the story than we're hearing however as a temp fix to the housing and lease issues, there ya go

That was the first thing I tried. Her exact words were "That's really his problem, isn't it?". The only way she'd let him stay would be to jack my rent up by $500. If we could swing that, he wouldn't be getting evicted in the first place. :wtc:

then follow ManInCamo's advice if she's truly a cold hearted bitch as you claim.

I am sorry to hear that. My father is also a retired vet and never made too many stable financial choices. I worry the same for him.

It just drives me to not make the same choices.

    Good luck.

Actually, she offered to move out, but my pops would never move in if she did. Aside from the fact he loves her like a daughter, he's the sorta stand up guy who wouldn't want to put anyone out because of his problems.

Good luck man, I don't have any advice to offer but I just wanna say good luck to you and your dad.

I just e-mailed Circuit City's corporate headquarters and gave them a piece of my mind, these fucking anti-American bastards would have the audacity to fire an American hero and Vietnam veteran for no other reason than to save a couple bucks an hour, it's disgusting and there should be laws against it. Everyone else should call up or submit a "contact us" form on their website: http://www.circuitcity.com/cs_customer_email.jsp?c=1

    This is what I submitted:

    Just as a quick update:

While we're still trying to get things in order, he's managed to get a little help from Michigan's unemployment office. They're putting him into some program that's supposed to help him find a new job. It just sucks because he's more than qualified for better, but there just isn't anything open.

He's been in touch with some vet groups, but he's being told there isn't much they can do until he's actually homeless. However, since he did suffer an injury on duty and was active during war time, he has been told he's able for at least something from the VA. We're expecting to hear back about that this week.
