Just started deadlifting, bent over BB rows, and straight leg deads a few weeks ago. My back is kind of sore, I'm going to try and strengthen it with hyperextensions and not go for a lot of heavy powerlifts for a while.

ANyways, I need to buy a belt. I'm a little guy so none of the belts at the gym come close to fitting.

I heard valeo is a decent brand?

    please give me some pros/cons
    -6 inch vs 4 inch
    -leather vs synthetic wrapping kind
    -brand
    -good online store

Truth, but you shouldnt wear a belt when doing rows, I only wear a belt when doing 1rm on deads, squats, and bench

People here always say they only use a belt when they're going for a max or something along those lines. Why?

I definitely don't plan on using the belt for most of my lifts. Mainly the heavy deads, maybe during the BB bent over rows, straight leg deads, and my last set of squats.

So people can build stablity without using a belt, not to mention I dont exactly wanna walk around the gym for 30mins with my gut being smushed in from having my belt on tight.

    $50 :eek3: from elitefts

Damn, that's a bit pricey, I was hoping for something in the $30 range.

Would you guys reccommend two prong or one prong?

Straight leg or stiff leg? Ive done 350x12 on stiff leg, and 315x12 on straight leg without a belt. Just dont try to do 1rep and you should be fine.

This is true, its just that at the moment my lower back is pretty sore, slightly strained. I don't know if using a belt would help me develop stability here for my deads?

Should I just concentrate on hyperextensions and other lower back excersizes to get the strength up there?

Do RDL's, GM's, curved back pull throughs.

    Straight leg.

I am a noob at this so I really don't think a blet is neccessary but until I strengthen my lower back, it almost seems like I will have a bit of a tightness there for a while, since I rest it for a day or two, and then head back to the gym.

    What's an RDL?

I'd definitely be willing to try the GMs, maybe just with the bar at first or something.

At the present however, after my back day, I have trouble running 3/4 mile without having to stop because my lower back is straining too much to keep my body really straight.

I have a 1 prong retro series belt from EFS - I love it. Make sure you measure around your GUT because thats where it will be worn, not around the waist. I put my belt on when I get to about 80% of my 1rm.

Is this pant sizes or gut? I have a 34" waist but have to get a 36" belt.

I'm not talking about your waist. I'm talking about your gut. You know, where your bellybutton is? Higher than you wear pants? Thats where weight belts fit. And be sure you're pushing out on your gut when you measure because thats how you will do it when you lift with it.

    That 28inch was waist.

I just measured my gut (around the bellybutton) and it is 29 around.

I think I have a belt from highschool that may fit you I will have to dig around in my closet.
If I can find it tonight I will mail it to you but you cover the cost of shipping. No promises though I may not be able to find it.

    :x:

I may hold off on the big belt purchase though. Just try and strengthen my lower back first, give it some rest, etc.

Do you guys think those $25 valeo belts with the velcro are ok? My 1RM as of this weekend was 205, I could have probably pulled more but my grip was failing.
