So I just got an Email stating that my hosting company is shutting down in February and I need a new one.

They recommended http://www.webfaction.com as an alternate.

I was paying 7.50/month for my site and email. Webfaction has plans starting at 9.50/month.

I don't need very much bandwidth or storage as I pretty much just use it for email and the occasional photo/file upload.

The site is a .ca domain if it makes a difference.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

Just curious about the reason for the recommendation.

Do you own the company? History of good service? Stuff like that.

I'm a noob when it comes to hosting. Just want to get myself in with a good one.

I actually worked for Hostgator. They offer unlimited bandwidth and space, but get you on the inode limit, and resource hogging, which is apparent for any type of shared server.

I've had them for about a year now(baby plan), no problems at all and I love them. Most people that hate HG have been caught breaking TOS, so they're a little bitter.

wp installation wont break TOS, but high traffic forum using a lot of resources will. if you need more, get a dedi.

they will suspend you right there and then, because it WILL cause a server to go down.

I manage to somehow bring a site down I have with them on shared hosting on a pretty regular basis ftping a few dozen files. They used to be a great service, just seems to be going downhill lately.

I use hostmysite.com for quite a few sites, while you can do some things like host multiple domains on one account, they have been very reliable. Also, nice to be able to call on the phone and get an answer on the 3rd or 4th ring, even at the shared hosting level.

Never used their shared hosting. I have a VPS there. Nothing but positive feedback from me.

:werd: I had a shared account with ASO for years, I canceled about 6 months ago after I realized my site was slow/down more often than it should be :squint:
