Well my campus connection blocks all torrents/newsgroups and I get horrible signal with my phone. I tried to use it as a modem and got horrible speeds(1 signal bar). I just picked up a USB wifi adapter with an external antenna. I wanna get a hipo antenna. There is an unsecured connection about a 150-200 yards away. There are a few buildings in the way though. I saw a 10 dbi antenna on ebay for like 10 bucks shipped. Not sure if the dbi rating is accurate though. What do i need?

Why? This is a legitimate computer question.

No, it is clearly ILLEGAL. Furthermore, you are attempting to bypass restrictions in place by your agreement with teh resident halls, which violates the C&P terms.

So you're breaking the LAW, and you're violating forum policy.

    Therefore, :lockd: and :gtfo:

How is it illegal, they left their connection unsecured? Also how does it violate resident hall policy? If I was using my schools connection and somehow bypassing it then I could understand.

If they left their car unlocked is it still theft it you take it? Yes. If they left their door open is it still Breaking & Entering if you go inside? Yes.

Although common-sense dictates that you must protect what you want to keep private, the law makes no such requirement when determining what is and is not a crime.

Pirating a wireless signal is Theft of Service, which is generally a felony.

I'm posting this because it could be useful, not because I think he should steal someone's internet.

Those high gain antennas like mentioned in the first post work really well in my past experiences...you just have to make sure you have a wireless card that allows a connection to an external antenna (most laptops do not).
