I've been settling for winamp's bullshit for a long time now. I downloaded foobar2000 but it looks stupid as fuck without skins, and I can't seem to get themes / skins to work properly.

I'm trying songbird, but it seems to be a resource hog. Anybody have any advice? Does anybody use songbird or any of the above?

Nope, I use the Zune software/media player. Also use JetAudio.

I've heard lots of good things about MediaMonkey

iTunes works great...easy to make playlists, looks good, and has never caused a problem for me.

I like iTunes, but a lot of people think it's bloated. Another that I've tried was SongBird, which seemed to work pretty well.

it is bloated, but it works nice if you have a network of computers and can share the playlist to everyone

I've been using winamp for a long time with no problems....

(just for audio files though, I use WMP for videos)

Wow, i'm pretty impressed with mediamonkey.

I've used winamp for as long as I can remember. I just think there has got to be better ones.

I'm in the same boat as most everyone else, nothing wrong with Winamp for me.

    Winamp for audio
KMPlayer (first) or VLC (second) for video, which btw you could use either one for your audio as well. KMPlayer's audio player is really an older version of Winamp.

it's okay, but I wish it was easier to modify playlists and look for songs. Like, if it had some sort of search bar like FF3's

I don't know how FF3's is, but when you open the media library, there is a search bar toward the top of it..... Also, I'm not sure how much easier modifying playlists can get other than with voice recognition.

nevermind, fixed it. I never selected any of the options under local media... I just dragged and dropped shit and stayed within playlists. Thanks guys.

Media monkey does rock though, less resources than Winamp / songbird too.

I have to say iTunes grew on me and I haven't been drawn away by anything else. Very simple. clean effective UI and it performs great. I also recently played around with the equalizer, normalization, sound enhancer and related options and it sounds even better now.

iTunes is nice, but it's too dumbed-down for my taste. I like an interface that makes the common functions easy to find, but also includes the advanced functions -- and as many as possible, at that. It can be tricky to know which functions most users will use constantly vs. which functions will get used occasionally and only by experienced users, but that's what usability testing is for. Fortunately, Winamp has a whole website and forum dedicated to this. Apple seems to prefer hiding the advanced features instead of delicately balancing ease and simplicity vs. flexibility.
