I need a new laptop for school, my 300 mhz sony vaio isn't keeping up anymore. So i decided I need a new one. I would like 1 in the $1800- CAD area. So far i have found, keep in mind these are canadian prices.

But i have heard from some people that dell isn't that great.

IMO, if you are looking at the compaq's, just get an HP. I have an HP laptop that hasn't failed me yet (well, except for that slight super-magnet incident), and, I know this may sound wierd, has the best feeling touchpad I've ever used. It's like it's not too rough, nor too smooth, it's just right, and it has a scroll wheel area of the touchpad that acts like a scroll wheel on a mouse.

hps are too expensive. a couple hundred more, and you get less.

I think I'm going to get a Toshiba myself - they're at Future Shop which means I can return it with ease. Personally I think Dell nickel and dimes you with options, the Toshiba comes with an integrated wireless and wired ethernet, and if you get the Centrino you get almost double the battery life.

But Compaq's - :ugh: Seriously - I hate Compaq's - they screwed up too much for me to ever trust them again without Hyundai incentives.

    powerbook g4.

they might be expensive but they have excellent resale value, and you'll fall in love with it within a matter of minutes.

if you dont want to go apple, dell is the way to do it. Just know the money you spent on it is being thrown out the window.
