So, I'm looking for a good lens to use for some private eye work for my company. Idealy I'm looking for something that can be used to get close to a subject but is sort of small and compact, something that can be handled inside a small car interior.

I think a zoom is pretty darn important since I'll be stuck in one place for hours at a time, I was thinking Canon 100-400L but the 5.6 seems a little slow, although I've heard the IS is fantastic on that lens.

I'm not looking for anything that's a sharpness king, but something that will still take good photos and can get into the 400+ range. How's the Sigma 150-500 still really slow, but it seems like it might work well, possibly with a tripod setup in the car.

    Any ideas?

Yeah, I've got a 40d, I've been using my 70-200 all day, but even on a crop body I find myself needing more reach.

The faster the lens, the bigger the glass. You can't really expect to get a fast glass that's compact.

I'd love a 400mm DO lens but being stuck at 400mm would be a bit of a pain in the ass, although I guess I've always got my 70-200 for when the 400 is too long....

    Hrrmmm.....

I've already got a 70-200, but it's the F4, How is 200 with the 2x TC? Does it have problems focusing in low light on a 40D?

If I'm going 4.5-5.6 I'd just go with the 100-400L.
