What's a dependable laptop that I can use for college (and maybe a smidge of high-end gaming :p) that's within the $1200 - $1300 range?

Dell, in that price range you will get the most out of going with a Dell and using some of the coupons. Go to www.notebookreview.com

    Compaq

    Only buy:
    Asus
    Apple
    IBM

Apple doesn't have what you need in your pricerange. Buy Asus/IBM. IBM usually offers student discounts. Check if your school has an IBM store.

    T43p FTW.

However I wouldn't really recommend Thinkpads for gaming. I'd go with the Asus or Dell. People knock the Dell but I have good luck both with most of their laptops and their support.

It's up to you in the end though.
