so i'm looking around for a "bang for the buck" lens and i've arrived at these three choices. now the question is...which one? i already have the tamron 18-270 and i plan on getting a tokina 11-16 f/2.8, and maybe a tamron 70-200 f/2.8 with some extension tubes.

    tamron 17-50 f/2.8, or tokina 16-50 f/2.8, or tamron 28-70 f/2.8?

any sigma lenses i should consider?

Tamron 17-50, 28-75 or tokina 11-16 would be the only wide/standard lenses i'd consider and if you're going to get the 70-200 version of anything, look at the Sigma instead of the Tamron.

i can pick one up used for more than i got my d90 for :o

so any particular reason you guys like the tamron 17-50 so much more than the tokina 16-50?

edit: oh, the tamron is $260 cheaper :o i think i'll go that direction then. thanks guys.

The tokina is probably pretty good but in the past, the only good lens they ever made was the 12-24. They did very well with the 11-16 but their other lenses just dropped short of everyone elses.

Tamron has come a long way and I can only assume they took what they did with the 28-75 and one-up'd it for the 17-50. The 28-75 when it first came out had a few issues but were quickly fixed and was, and is probably still, one of the sharpest lenses for the money.

Again, for the price the Tamron is great.

This is SOC with just some levels adjustment and resized:

    And this is 100% crop:

It's not stupid sharp but not bad for the money.

Get the Tamron 17-50, but make sure you get the first version without the internal motor.

17-50 if focus speed isn't a huge issue. It is really quite sharp.
