CD-ROM drive went out the other day, so I figure it's time for me to buy a DVD burner. Problem is I really don't know much about the brands out there while browsing on newegg, so can anyone offer suggestions? The burner has to be black (to fit in with the case) and preferably (sp?) under $100 (or atleast around it).

I just got sony's new double layer burner for $140. I would definetly recommend it. Don't forget to download yourself a copy of dvd x copy from any p2p service.

Dual layer burning is definately a must, but most burners out are starting to support it anyways. Thanks for the replies.

Good lord, you should send that CDROM to the Smithsonian. They can surely use it in one of their exhibits.

I bought the dell about 2 years ago, I forget if DVD burners were out then, if they were, it was way too expensive. Don't even have a DVD player in the computer. :wtc:

Anyone know when Dual Layer media will start to be available to the public?

I would recommend the NEC 2500A and then flash it to make into the NEC 2510A(DL burning)

The only thing about the dual layer media is that it will be way expensive for at least a few months.

Maybe you should just get an 8x single layer. They still can hold a movie that looks good.

Pinnacle Instant Copy works really good for me.

ive used clonedvd (elby.ch 45 bucks) and dvddecrypter (dvddecrypter.com and free)exclusively for nearly 10 months now and i love them both, i think it really just a matter of personal preference. i have a friend who uses dvdshrink and image tool (both freeware) and he has the same succes rate as myself.

the dual layer media is supposed to start at like 4-6 bucks a disc... no way will i ever use it when 4x media is .53 for great quality stuff. also, unless you want the menus and deleted scenes and stuff like that youll never really need a dual layer writer or writeable disc because about 99% of the movies out there can be compressed to reasonable sizes with nop noticable loss in video or audio quality.

just get the lite-on 8x burner from wal mart... its gets spectacular reviews by everyone who burns alot of discs.
