You get what you pay for. Cheap and reliable don't go together. I'd shell out for your own low end dedicated server from someplace like ev1server.net and go solo. Then your speeds and reliability are based on your own activity.

I've had my own servers for 7 years and would never go back. I even work for a large webhosting company and still recommend this over shared hosting. I wont mention the company I work for as we're in the same boat as dreamhost.

Colocating costs an arm and a leg. Its much cheaper just renting a dedicated server.

That's going to cost you a lot. You have cabinet rent, bandwidth, monitoring, etc. It is much cheaper to rent a dedicated and if hardware breaks, you're not financially responsible for it either. On top of that, you have the ability to upgrade to a better server at anytime, where as if you colo you have to purchase and mail parts, pay installation labor, etc.
