After I’m done with boot camp anyway. A couple days ago I auditioned for and won a trumpet position with the US Navy band in Washington, DC. About 35 people showed up to the audition for 1 job. I’m leaving grad school and after basic training will enter at pay grade E-6, with my official rank being Musician First Class. In the Army and Marines, this is the same as Staff Sergeant
    Specialist or Staff Sergeant. http://www.princetonreview.com/cte/articles/military/paygrades.asp

Needless to say I am quite pleased.
Although I’ll be working in the White House, Pentagon (I’ll soon have white house security clearance :noes: ) , Arlington National Cemetery, etc, my official residence will be likely be in Virginia. I know nothing of Virginia’s gun laws. Educate me. Can you CCW? (also, how does CCW work when one is active duty military?) Anything else I should know? What restrictions if any does Virginia have that stick out?

and I no nothing about the Navy boot camp? Hard? Easy? Little bit of both? something all my friends keep asking me is will I shoot small arms in boot camp??? I honestly don't know about it in the navy boot camp and don't know what to tell those who ask.

And any band nerds/college music majors turned military musicians on OT?

When I went through boot...you did a familiarization class with the 9mm...but only fired the modified M16 they had...first day was on the laser range...2nd day was a live fire to qualify.

And congratulations on being an E-6 upon graduation of basic...but remember you are a MU1 and not to abuse that rank privilege as you have a lot to learn about being a NCO, much less being a 1st Class Petty Officer. Enjoy the band though.

oh don't worry..hopefully no one in basic training will find out my rank upon graduation. I sure as hell won't let anyone know. and if it does come out I won't make a big deal about it.
and once I start the job I'll really only associate with those in the Navy band, i.e., other MU1's (that have been in longer, and thus outrank me) and higher ranks. so there is really nothing I can abuse, even if I was a stupid idiot. which I don't think I am.

as for CCW...just google Va's gun laws....military doesn't provide you any extra benefits as far as CCW goes...it may waive you from having to take a required gun safety class like here in Fl but that's about the only benefit you'll have.

being a native texan I would definitely prefer the summer version.

part of my duties in the band (since I am a trumpet player) will involve playing at funerals and ceremonies and such. in every flavor of weather. and it gets very cold in DC. so I'm guess I'm going to have to get used to this cold weather bullshit.

you only fire the shotgun 2 or 3 times i think. I went through navy boot camp about 6 months ago. Not difficult at all, but it may seem so while you're there.

I doubt it. duty station is the DC Navy Band headquarters in the DC Navy yard. I guess for me they aren't concerned with trivial things like shooting :ugh2: :greddy:

too bad, I was looking forward to it.

Pretty much the only way you'll get real shooting experience in the navy is if it's necessary for your rate, like master at arms, in which case you'll get it at your A school. Or you could always learn on your own. And when i went 7 months ago, they still had the M9 class in boot.

Or go to a ship with SSDF (large ships overseas mostly). 9mm, 12gau, M14, M16, 50cal, M60 are all part of the quals for for it.

And you can get both shooting ribbons in bootcamp so they have to offer both. Can grad bootcamp with 4 ribbons now ><
