Both the place I work at now, and the new place I will be working at both use Nagios.

We use it to monitor pretty much everything under the sun from the system level things, to even our own monitors we created to watch our processes that we run. It's pretty neat and very configurable.

We use it with mysql pretty easily. It wasn't very hard to setup at actually. We are just checking to see if the database is up and can be connected with. I'm not sure what you are planning on using it for.

Documentation is kinda lacking. Anyone ever built a Nagios plugin?

Not a full on plug in.. We write our own scripts to determine if there is an error, and then just have nagios come over and pick up if it was successful or not with any data we want to report on.
