Check out the new Archos TV. Supposedly it's everything AppleTV was supposed to be, in a perfect world.

Name anything that doesn't get mixed reviews.

I've seen them build a box for it on Systm back when the show first got started.

i looked into this quite a while back and found it was cheaper/better at the time to go with TiVo than build a dedicated media system and run MythTV. i'm not sure anymore, but TiVo is just too expensive for what you get. back then i could get a regular TiVo for $50 plus $12/month for service. now, you want HD content so you have to pay $300 for the box plus $13/month plus it is a pain in the nuts to get the stuff off of the TiVo if you want to do anything with it.

anyway, my point is i'm interested in finding out what your experience is. :)

Yeah I've got a cable DVR and it's cool. For me tho, it's more about building a media/entertainment center for the house. I dunno, just something that's interesting to me.

can either of them do automated updates of tv schedules? i remember i had some software that came with an ATI all-in-wonder card (bought it before i realized how crappy it was) and it was cool other than the fact that it could only hold a week's worth of tv schedules and you had to manually download. so, you couldn't do weekly schedules for show recordings or anything like that.

    why?

SageTV, MythTV, MediaPortal, Win MCE, etc = all offer PVR solutions

google MythTV vs Windows Media Center comparison.
the main diff is that Win MCE is a bundled package, MythTV, on the other hand, can be personalized.

one is open source and one isn't. i'd say that's the major difference.

I didn't look around too much but didn't see whether it is a Linux or Windows program?

EDIT: Nevermind, found my answer, "known to work on Linux and Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel)."

is that service free again or do you have to pay?

I had mythTv, but when tv schedules switched to pay i got windows MCE and it's fantastic. I really wouldn't go back at this point because there is nothing I'm unhappy with about it.

    still free with microsoft
others still charge a subscription fee

I was actually planning to build a PVR system before with MythTV, but Windows Media Center turned out more practical and more simple so I just used it instead.

Interesting. I have Win MCE on my laptop but I didn't know all that! I guess I just assumed that it was just XP with a different player on it.

    Thanks for the info.
