something that can fit easily in a small bag/purse, it will be used for home defense so something small enough that it won't shoot through walls or anything should the need to use it arise :o

I don't really know much about guns so any help would be appreciated, thanks :hs:

If she is unfamilar with semi-auto's, I'd go with a Smith & Wesson airweight revolver of some sort.

Almost all handgun ammunition will penetrate a wall. It's just part of the risk involved in using a gun for defense and something she will need to plan for.

Just my opinion, but I would look into buying more than one gun if you need a small handgun to carry. A hammerless snubnose .38 would work well in a purse but would not be an ideal choice for the home. Good shotguns are available at very reasonable prices for home protection. It's also a good excuse to buy more guns ;).

If you can, find a local range that rents guns and have her try out whats available. Find what she likes and shoots well.

You definitely want to avoid the gun show dealers pushing the .22s, .25s and .32s as good guns for ladies. I watched a couple at a show a while back getting sold on one. Possibly the only good thing to come from the Assault Weapons Ban was that once round capacity was limited manufacturers began to focus more on smaller designs in larger calibers. These days there are plenty of small handguns available in effective calibers that she should have no problem shooting.

Nothing wrong with the mini Berettas and Keltecs, but as a primary defensive pistol I'd look to something a little more stout.

Mine carries the Bersa .380 auto, loves it. Smallish, simple, but enough to take the fight out of someone when you put holes in them with it.

because some of us have no problems with them and they are great for what they are designed to be.
3 keltecs here, all of them work like a charm. Trick is not to have weak grip with them.

If her hands are of uncommonly small size that renders her truly unable to reach the trigger on Old Reliable, then you'd want to look at hammerless Smiths or slim single stacks like Kahr.

Avoid getting so concerned with finding something concealable that you ignore her ability to grip the weapon quickly and comfortably.

Anything worth shooting at another person will go through several sheets of regular drywall, so your options for limiting overpenetration are mainly in the shooter, not the gun.

I was gonna mention Bersa .380 also. Inexpensive so you can afford the pricey .380 ammo.
